When the king, Uther Pendragon, died the country was surrounded with chaos. All of the knights wanted to rule as king. Merlin called a counsel at a church and they saw a sword in stone that said "whoso pulleth out this sword is by right of birth King of England". All of the knights came forward but were unable to draw the sword from the stone. They decided to host a tournament to invite more knights to try to take the sword.

A boy named Arthur came with his foster-brother, Sir Kay. Sir Kay forgot his sword when at the tournament and had Arthur go get it for him. When Arthur was unable to get the sword, he decided he would get the one from the stone for his foster-brother to use. He took the sword out easily and delivered it to Sir Kay who lied to his father and said he had taken out the sword. Sir Kay's father decided to take both Arthur and Sir Kay to the stone and test them to see who could take it out of the stone. Arthur was able to do it again and they realized he must be the son of Uther Pendragon,  the true heir to the throne. He then did this again in front of knights and commoners alike to prove to them that he was the heir. Once they were convinced he was knighted and made King of England.
