Forked roads
A long time ago, there was a man
that died and was buried in a village. For 4 nights his ghost had to walk a
very dark trail. Then he reached the Milky Way and there was plenty of light. This
is why they keep the funeral fires burning for 4 days to help light the way. As
he walked along the Milky Way he came to a fork in the road. There an old man
sat dressed on a buffalo robe. He told him that one path was short and led to
the land of good ghost the other was long and dark and led nowhere. The spirits
of suicide ghost must stand over there grave forever going nowhere and the
murders are sent on the long path to starve and wail forever.
Tattooed Ghosts
For a ghost to walk safely on the
ghost road, then during life they must tattoo their forhead or their wrist.
There is an old woman who sits in the afterlife and examines those who pass. If
she finds the tattoo marks you go to the Many Lodges. If there is no tattoo
they are pushed out and forced to wander the world in unrest. If a ghost
visits, cedar smoke will keep them away and if a ghost calls to a loved one and
they answers then they are going to die soon as well. If a ghost catches you then he will pull your
mouth and eyes crooked
A ghost story
A group of Indians on a warpath
decided to make camp for the night. In the night they could hear singing and
soon found a man standing alone. The surrounded the man and closed in on him
but he did not stop singing. As they closed on him he disappeared and all they
saw was a pile of human bones.
